Aarau Cantonal Hospital

The new building of the Aarau Cantonal Hospital comprises a four-story base for the outpatient clinic and functional areas, topped by a six-story patient tower. In the subsoil of the newly designed hospital park, the two basement levels of the new building are connected to the existing structures via various channels.

The new building covers an area of approximately 120 x 150m and is 50m high. The supporting structure is based on a regular column grid of 7.5m, drop-panel in-situ concrete slabs, and prefabricated columns. Together with the ten cores, which ensure horizontal bracing, this creates high flexibility for use and future expansions. The shell construction is planned for completion between 2021 and 2023. To maintain hospital operations around the construction site, the underground connection to the existing main building, a 90m long tunnel to the logistics building, and other channels will be constructed beforehand.

The project’s scale, the short planning and construction period, and building amidst existing hospital structures with ongoing operations present a multitude of exciting challenges. We are committed to contributing to excellent solutions with holistic approaches. Planning is carried out using BIM, and the general contractor will also build directly from our models.
