Südostschweizmedien (SOM) Chur

1st prize in competition

With the new media house in Chur, Südostschweizmedien (SOM) consolidated its editorial offices for all media, marketing, sales, and administration at a central location in 2014. The new business center houses 300 Somedia employees and 80 student training places for the University of Applied Sciences Chur.

The garage and technical rooms are located in the basement, which is made of in-situ concrete. Vertical loads are distributed and founded via thickenings in the floor slab. Horizontal forces are transferred via extremely short core walls to the basement and from there into the ground.

The ground floor and the three upper floors are completely prefabricated, with the exception of the cores. Slender ribbed slabs, which define the architecture, span from the cores to the facade. A concrete topping ensures the horizontal diaphragm action, so that horizontal forces are directed to the cores. The open staircase forms a spatially exciting spiral!
